Mastery is the use of effective coping
skills in planning for and responding to influences in the environment, thus
enabling some predictability, adaptation, and self-direction. Mastery is
comprised of competence (the capacity to understand and act reasonably), and
goal-directed behavior (any activity directed toward conscious or explicitly
defined objectives).
Mastery is thus beyond mere existence and simple
self-balance—it enables desired individual growth and development. It is
optimal function through optimal self-management.
