HATE IN AMERICA
We fear those who are different from us. We fear they will take from us our identity and what we value. We ignore our inner commonality.
Ignorance of commonality arises from acceptance of racial myths as truth. Myths as truth arise from the absence of independent, evidence-based thinking. Awareness of commonality is a basis of respect for diversity. Our public schools attempt to raise awareness of commonality and the value of diversity.
Although schools and laws exist, racism persists. Using subtle coercion, families, communities, cultures and social media perpetuate racist attitudes and beliefs in youth.
If hate is a part of our democracy, we are not a true democracy – we are a hypocrisy.
We must work to dispel myth. We must find the courage to challenge or expose racism and intolerance. We must eliminate barriers to acceptance, inclusion, opportunity, and human development.
We must embrace all humankind as family.
