In public we look away from a well-meaning stranger.
But why do we see him as immediate danger?
Our heads we bow as we look quickly away.
We furrow our brow and resume our full day.
What are we afraid of? Let’s change how we act.
Let’s show what we’re made of and make eye contact.
We can make someone’s day (at least elevate his mood).
With our smile and kind words, he’ll be refreshed and renewed.
We each can begin to turn on the charm.
Let’s express what’s within— it would do us no harm.
If we extend our caring, so genuine and warm,
The good will we’re sharing can become our norm.
Our gifts of humanity— a nod, or a “Hi!”
Are investments in others. Let's give it a try!
